Nur um wenige Bibliotheken ranken sich so viele Mythen wie um diese: Das Vatikanische Geheimarchiv, ein Ort, der die Fantasie von Literaten und Verschwörungstheoretikern gleichermaßen beflügelt, erstreckt sich über etwa 85 Kilometer an Regalen. Irgendwie hat Fin es auf seiner Reise dann doch hinein geschafft. Hier werden sämtliche vom Heiligen Stuhl verfassten Gesetze sowie die diplomatische Korrespondenz der Päpste seit dem 13. Jahrhundert aufbewahrt. Unter den unvollständig inventarisierten Beständen von etwa 35.000 Bänden sind unvorstellbare Schätze wie etwa Briefe von Michelangelo oder ein Brief Heinrichs VIII. zur Annullierung seiner Ehe. Auch der Bestseller-Autor Dan Brown greift in seinem Thriller "Illuminati" die mysteriöse Aura des Archivs auf. Ganz so geheim ist das Archiv allerdings nicht mehr: Papst Franziskus ließ im Jahre 2019 das Wort "Secretum" aus dem Namen streichen und benannte es in "Apostolisches Archiv" um. Zugang wird dennoch nur ausgesuchten Wissenschaftlern gewährt.

Only a few libraries are the subject of as many myths as this one: The Vatican Secret Archives, a place that captures the imagination of literary figures and conspiracy theorists alike, spans around 85 kilometers of shelves. But somehow Fin managed to get in there. All the laws written by the Holy See and the diplomatic correspondence of the popes since the 13th century are kept here. Among the incompletely inventoried holdings of around 35,000 volumes are unimaginable treasures such as letters from Michelangelo or a letter from Henry VIII on the annulment of his marriage. In his thriller "Illuminati", the bestselling author Dan Brown also refers to the mysterious aura of the archive. However, the archive is no longer quite so secret: Pope Francis had the word "Secretum" removed from the name in 2019 and renamed it the "Apostolic Archive". Access is still only granted to selected scholars.
